Wednesday, 6 December - Well, arctic air has arrived in a big way here in the Northland....blustery conditions, frigid temps and snowmaking! We are stoked, yet also hopeful those winds cooperate for us to continue pumping out the wonderful white stuff to open additional terrain as quickly as possible. Plans at this point are operations this weekend, Saturday & Sunday, 12/9-12/10, from 10am-6pm. Looks like we will add SkyHooker to the mix this weekend as well as widen up Four Pipe along with a few other trails, and then put together a NEW set in Lone Oak Rope Park. Should be a nice weekend to hit the snow, and looks like we could see daily ops beginning here around December 15! Stay tuned, and Think Snow!

Monday, 4 December - Thank you to everyone that came out and enjoyed the hill this weekend.  It was great days of sunshine and Good Times on the snow.  We are preparing for major SNOWMAKING temps and conditions to begin late tonight/early Tuesday, and it is most certainly GAME ON for round the clock snowmaking all week long! This weekend we will be open Saturday and Sunday 10am-6pm; December 9 & 10.  Stay tuned as we will post open terrain, Terrain Park sets and more!  Have a good week and we will see you on the snow soon!

Friday, 1 December - Busy times continue here on the hill, and the crews are wrapping up efforts for another weekend of operations. We have a NEW Rope Park set, some additional features over on Powder Monkey, and will also add in a significant portion of Four Pipe! Looks like we will have a fairly mild weather weekend, so grab your crew and come on out to enjoy the early-season snow. The even better news, significant COLD air is moving in and we anticipate snowmaking to resume late-Monday/early-Tuesday...this is the stretch we have been waiting on, and stoked to make more snow & add more skiable terrain to the mix very soon!!

Here's a quick rundown on the NEW features available in The Parks this weekend:

Tuesday, 28 November - It's hard to believe that we are only a few days away from December 1, and we already have a couple weekends of GOOD TIMES under our belts! We definitely had an exciting Thanksgiving weekend on the slopes with skiing, riding, Snocross and snowmaking...thanks to all for coming out to enjoy Duluth, and we certainly appreciate the many compliments, the kudos and the support...always nice to see smiles here on the hill!!

We will continue with weekend operations this coming Saturday & Sunday, December 2 & 3, and roll hours of 10am-6pm both days. Here's a few details you should know about the coming weekend:

  • The Skyline Chalet and Grand Avenue Chalet will both be open for business. We highly encourage our guests to join us for full amenities at our Grand Avenue Chalet, however the Skyline Chalet seasonal locker room will be available as well as some limited food & beverage options.
  • You can pick up season passes and purchase lift tickets at either chalet.
  • There will be NO lessons available this weekend, and beginner terrain is limited.
  • Anticipated Terrain: Four Pipe, Sissor Bill, Bindle Stiff, Powder Monkey, Downhill Musher, Log Roller and Lone Oak Rope Park and possibly a portion of Sky Hooker.
  • FRESH set on Lone Oak Rope Park & more features on the slopes!
  • Anticipated Lifts/Tows:  Spirit Express II, High Speed Rope Tow, Summit Chair (as needed)
  • $35 lift tickets & 1/2 Price Rentals
  • Respect Gets Respect!

To answer a few questions in looking ahead, please see below:

When will WEEKDAY OPERATIONS begin? At this time, our focus must be on snow conservation and snowmaking. Though we are certainly very thankful for the early start to the season, the past couple of weeks have been less than ideal for making snow; and this trend appears to continue for the next week with day time temps pushing that 40 mark and overnights back around freezing. We simply must preserve the snow we have while we roll through this transitional week. Once we move into early-next week, it appears likely we have a significant system of sustained cold air which should provide BIG TIME snowmaking opportunities for quite some time!!

Our thoughts at this point are to potentially see some limited weekday operations as early as the week of December 11th but we simply will need to see how all unfolds with the weather and snowmaking. I feel fairly confident to state that we should be rolling daily by 12/15, if not sooner...stay tuned, and think cold!

What about SPIRIT PARK? Please understand that we have a lot of ground to cover here on the hill, and tough to do it all at once. However, the big park will most certainly be getting some attention on the snowmaking side when we fire back up the system next week. Several guns will be blasting away, and hopefully we can see some snow-stick temps to speed up the process. We simply need time and cold, and looks like it is coming. For now, enjoy the Rope Park and expect some additional features to be installed on our open terrain very soon!

When do LESSONS begin? We anticipate having our Prospector Learning Area open by the weekend of December 9 & 10, and will commence with teaching skiing & snowboarding lessons as soon as we open this area.

When does SNOW-TUBING open? We simply need more snowmaking to get the tube hill in proper shape. If all holds true, we could potentially see some tubing as early as December 15th or more probable might be around the 22nd. Stay tuned, and we will certainly let you know as soon as we do! Oh yeah, you'll be stoked with the NEW addition to the tube hill this winter..."glow tubing" debuts in Duluth soon!

In the meantime, don't miss out on cost-savings before the winter season gets into full swing! Season Pass deadline is November 30th. This means, the last day to receive discounted rates on a season pass is only here for a few more days.  DETAILS & PURCHASE

Thanksgiving Weekend

November 24, 2017 | 283 | Winter

WOW! What an awesome opening weekend we had to kick off our 44th season at Spirit Mountain!  We appreciate everyone that came out to help us begin the season, and most certainly appreciate the many compliments & kind words. It was a Good Time for sure!

Over the weekend we spotted the following shredders on the hill...

  • An Olympian!
  • A Professional Snowboarder, or perhaps two!
  • Folks from Far Away - Cajuns (meaning our NEW friends from Louisiana)
  • Folks from Not-So-Far-Away - Minnesotans, Wisconsinites, Dakota-folks, Chicagoans, Canadians, many Duluthians & More!
  • Lots and lots of happy season passholders
  • A ton of youngsters (and, young at heart) in the Rope Park
  • And, SMILES - SMILES - SMILES

From all of us here at Spirit Mountain - we offer a sincere "Thank You" for visiting Duluth and enjoying your time at Spirit...the winter stoke is officially ON!

So, now we roll into Thanksgiving Weekend and our 26th Annual AMSOIL Duluth National Snocross. Professional snowmobile racing descends upon Duluth for 3 of the Fastest Days of on-snow sled racing in the USA, plus we have more skiing & riding activities on tap as well...here's the scoop!

Thanksgiving Weekend Details

Skiing & Snowboarding (Grand Avenue Chalet-ONLY!!)

  • Friday-Saturday-Sunday, 10am-6pm
  • $35 lift tickets, + tax.
  • Half-Price Ski or Snowboard Rentals
  • Due to Snocross, all SKIER SERVICES roll out of our Grand Avenue Chalet. Including all season pass pickup, ticket sales, rental equipment, food, beverage and bar.
  • All drop-off's and pick-ups must happen at our Grand Avenue Chalet, 8551 Grand Ave, Duluth  MN
  • There will be NO beginner terrain open and NO lessons
  • No access to Seasonal Locker Room at top chalet
  • Lone Oak Tow Park will be open
  • Plans on open terrain for the weekend are Powder Monkey, Bindle Stiff, Downhill Musher, Scissor Bill, Log Roller and lower Four Pipe. Additional terrain may become available as snowmaking continues.

Snocross - all events happen at the Skyline Chalet.

Looking Ahead...there are many questions regarding ski hill operations and schedules as we move past Thanksgiving, so I'll take a quick moment and give a quick outlay. Obviously, and just like many of you, we are excited to have some early-season sliding and riding, however, we have much work to do in order to get the ski area into full operation. Our major priority and focus over these next few weeks is simply to make as much snow as possible whenever we can do so. Our plan for skiing/riding will be to roll with weekend operations for the first couple of weeks in December. This could certainly change pending how quickly we can get all in order, but from what we see weather-wise, it looks like we get a fairly serious cold stretch starting up over Thanksgiving Weekend and potentially going for a solid couple of weeks...this would be quite ideal to pump-out a great deal of snow to get the remaining slopes, parks and lifts rolling ASAP...stay tuned for updates, and we'll keep you informed as all comes together.

Again, thank you for the continue patronage and support...and, here's to the winter we have all been awaiting....#44 is hopefully going down as one we will all remember quite fondly for many times to come!

Cheers!

Opening Weekend 2017/2018

November 19, 2017 | 283 | Winter

Friday, 17 November 2017 at 5pm - Here's the update as we roll towards our first slides, rides and laps of the season!

First off, the Tow Park looking legit with right at 10 features for this weekend's initial sessions....well done to the Mountain Ops & Park Crew for making it happen!

Here's the "play-list" for V1.0 of Lone Oak Tow Park 2017/18:

Pro Line:  30' street style down rail, 25' street style down-flat rail, Z-rail with barrel bonk

Open Line:  21' double-barrel shotgun rail, Big Bertha tube on spine, 7' Volcano feature

Grom Line: Baby Bow box, 8' flat box, 16' flat box, 25' Damage down box

We have no beginner terrain open, no bunny hill and no green circle terrain.

...a solid set for ALL to enjoy!

Secondly, we basically have our primary top-to-bottom intermediate trail of Bindle Stiff available for the opening weekend and will be rolling the Spirit Express II. Please understand that although we have fairly decent coverage on the trail, it is certainly not treeline to treeline and has some narrow as well as thin cover spots as well. Still much fun to be had for those early-season turns, but just not a ton of real estate due to no additional snowmaking since last weekend. The snow will actually ski-out pretty nicely, and expect a solid machine groomed packed powder surface when we roll things out tomorrow morning.

The better news - we do anticipate snowmaking opportunities to return overnight or early-Saturday morning, and then throughout most of the weekend & next week. We are hopeful this will allow additional terrain to be readied/open by Thanksgiving Weekend!

I want to give another well done to the snowmakers for the solid efforts, and let's make sure Mother Nature gets her creds as well for providing the opportunities.

Enjoy, and welcome to the Winter Season of 2017/18 in Duluth!

PRIOR POST - Opening Weekend is quickly approaching for the 2017/2018 season!  Mother Nature has been quite kind with the cold temps, and we've had some solid snowmaking opportunities last week with hopes of more to come by mid to late week as well. We will roll with an early-season bonus weekend, and thoughts at this point are as follows:

Early Season Ski Hours - Winter 2017/2018

  • Saturday & Sunday - November 18-19, 2017 || 11am-5pm
  • $29 ticket and half price rentals

Thanksgiving Weekend - NOTE - due to Snocross, all skier services will be located out of our Grand Avenue Chalet.  There will be NO access to the seasonal Locker Room during Snocross.  If you are dropping your skier or snowboarder off for the day, you must drop off at the Grand Ave Chalet.  There will not be drop off access at Skyline Chalet.

  • Friday, 11/24 = 10am-6pm
  • Saturday, 11/25 = 10am-6pm
  • Sunday, 11/26 = 10am-6pm
  • Tow Park, Powder Monkey, Downhill Musher, Bindle Stiff will be open. But again, no drop off at the Skyline Chalet.
  • Additional terrain to open at snowmaking allows

Hours to be updated soon for operational plan after November 26th soon.

Terrain Open:

  • We will know much more as we move into Wednesday, but our plan at this point is to OPEN our Tow Park, Powder Monkey, Bindlestiff and Downhill Musher
  • There will be no beginner terrain and no lessons available this weekend
  • All rental equipment needs are out of the Grand Avenue Chalet

Chalets:

  • Skyline Chalet will feature access to locker room, limited season pass pick up & ticket sales, Mountain Top Cafe open for eats and drinks.

  • Grand Avenue Chalet will feature season pass pick up, season pass sales & ticket sales, Riverside Bar and Grill for all eats and drinks!

CHEERS to an amazing 2017/18 Winter in Duluth...stoked to get things rolling and excited for the good times ahead in Minnesota's Best Ski Town!

Looking ahead, we anticipate snowmaking and additional skiable terrain to become available as we move towards Thanksgiving Weekend...plus, Snocross is going to be crazy fun as well!

Welcome to Snovember

November 9, 2017 | 283 | Winter

Exciting times are ON here in Duluth!  As many are aware, our snowmaking system was fired-up Monday afternoon. Crews have been rolling around the clock ever since, and will continue to do so as conditions allow. These initial 48 hours of cold have produced some fairly solid results, but we are even more stoked in what we see in the projected weather models for the upcoming 48 hours.  Forecasts look quite promising for the coldest temps of this early season thus far which should make for excellent snowmaking opportunities.  We will be taking full advantage of any and all chances to pump-out as much of the wonderful white stuff as possible!

If all holds together and the weather cooperates, we anticipate spinning a rope and/or lift for some early-season skiing & riding in the very near future. It's a bit premature to put out any definite dates/times, however, we will set our target opening for November 18th! Not entirely sure how this may look at this very point in time, but we'll certainly have a better idea here soon enough on available terrain and plans very soon...so, stay tuned and we'll keep you informed as all unfolds.

Thanks for your continued support and patronage, and here's to an amazing winter season!

Think Snow. Think Cold. Think Spirit!

Early Snow Welcome Here

November 9, 2017 | 283 | Winter

Let it SNOW...snowmaking is officially ON! Stay tuned for updates...

2 November 17 - It is certainly nice to see some early "winter" here in the Northland! We saw a solid 5" of snowfall late last week (Duluth International Airport reported 10" out of that weather event, but we didn't quite see that much on the slopes!), and then another few inches blessed us yesterday. Plus, the colder air is starting the cooling of the water and ground, which will be of significant benefit once the snowguns are rolling. The even better news is that we should see some quality snowmaking opportunities coming our way early next week as temps look to sustain with overnights in the lower-20s (possibly into the teens a couple nights, too!) and day-time temps, hopefully, remaining below the freezing mark as well...and that theme appears to be in most weather models for the next 10-14 day projections!

As our snowmaking and mountain operations crew team continue the final preparation, we are obviously stoked for this early onset of winter weather and feeling excited, optimistic & anxious for the coming ski season!

It's a bit too early to talk about a projected opening day, but we will certainly keep everyone informed of the happenings as all unfolds with snowmaking...perhaps we see some early, mid SNo-vember turns on the slopes this year!?!

Stay dialed to the website and our social media as we roll along these next couple of weeks, and make sure to be on the lookout for our NEW! APP which will be launching soon....a great way to earn loyalty rewards and some sweet perks for yourself & your crew!

Thanks for the continued support of Spirit Mountain and Minnesota's Best Ski Town - Duluth!

Here's to an amazing winter season of good times with great people...Think Snow!

October Savings

October 15, 2017 | 280 | Winter

15 October 2017 @ 8:05am - Adventure Park and Scenic Chairlift will operate from 11am-5pm today.  We did receive over a half inch of rain last night; with this stated our Bike Park will operate 1pm-5pm.  Our crews need a bit more time for maintenance and trails need extra dry time.  We will feature a $19 Mountain Bike Ticket today. Trails planned to be open will be Sprung A Leek, Candy & Smorg.

14 October 2017 @ 7:45am - All operations are a go for Saturday.  Bike Park and Adventure Park open 11am-6pm.  It is absolutely beautiful on the hill as the Fall colors are amazing...enjoy a scenic lift ride to take in the views.  See you on the hill!

13 October 2017 at 7pm - A beautiful day here in Duluth, and looking pretty solid for Saturday & Sunday ops at the Adventure Park & Bike Park! Temps are expected to be on the cool-side to start the days, but crawl into the 50s by mid-day.  Those chances of rain for Saturday have been bumped back into the late-afternoon/early-evening hours and perhaps may bump even more into the evening from some models we see. Rain chances continue overnight, but should be OUT well in advance of our Sunday operations. The bike trails are in PRIME shape here today, and should hold up very nicely for the weekend riding...just so long as we don't get any ridiculous amounts of rain...which, again, does not seem likely. So, we'll be chilling in the Northland, and invite YOU to join us.  We also welcome the many young mountain bikers from throughout the region to the Duluth Stop on the NICA Series...best of luck, be safe and enjoy the course! The fall colors are nearly at PEAK, so don't delay, get to DULUTH today.

Previous - The leaves are changing colors, the temps are getting cooler and winter is just around the corner.  That also means that October is the month of savings at Spirit Mountain!  From season passes to learn to programs...there is something for everyone at Spirit Mountain.
